Kidney transplant: partnering with providers, empowering patients

We work with health care providers from a wide variety of disciplines to improve patient care through health literacy – it’s what we do.

In kidney transplant, for us, that means doing in-person trainings and workshops with dialysis providers and other professionals who care for people with end stage renal disease (ESRD).

These are part of our Explore Transplant program, which supports discussions about kidney transplant and living donation, to ensure people understand their options and make the best decision for their health.

In July 2018, Health Literacy Education Manager Christina Goalby, M.S.W., presented at the HealthInsight ESRD Alliance Network 18 Annual Quality Conference. There, she shared best practices with dialysis professionals to improve care for ESRD patients and their families. More than 250 dialysis providers, including nephrology nurses, social workers, dietitians, and technicians from the southern California area filled the seats for our afternoon workshop.

Through an hour of lecture, discussion, and activities (interactive presentations are our thing, too), attendees learned:

  • Barriers that many patients face when thinking about and pursuing kidney transplant, including myths about transplant and donation and why better education is needed

  • Evidence-based health literacy strategies to overcome barriers and clearly communicate about transplant with patients and their families

  • All about Explore Transplant’s newly-revised kidney transplant and living donation education programs

Wondering how you can hear this workshop in person?

We are partnering with Duke Transplant Center to conduct two Explore Transplant Dialysis provider trainings. Christina will be in Greensboro, NC on August 21st and in Durham, NC on the 23rd. Registration for these sessions is open through August 13th. CEUs will be available! Register now by clicking on the date you'd like to attend:

Christina will also be presenting at the Quality Insights Network 3 Annual Meeting in early October! Click here to learn more. We hope to see you there!
